Peppers job is to be a caretaker and guide in the Kalasatama Healthcare center in Helsinki. Kajetski interviews Pepper in one screen of the two-channel installation. In the other screen the viewer gets to see a representation of what Pepper sees and how it tries to detect human facial expressions. This screen is a replica of Peppers vision. As time passes on, the viewer can smell and see the fog coming out of the lump on the ground and sees the paintings on the walls. They can also feel a small vibration beneath them. The personal video essay is what glues all parts of the installation inside the black box together. “The video takes us back to the first lock down in 2020. The video is a personal story about how I found a wasteland near my home. The wasteland became a safe place for walks every day as I was going through a tough medical process during lockdown. Model in images: Matilda Keränen. EchoChamber is an immersive installation featuring a video that explores themes of entertainment and surveillance. The video begins with artist Annabel Kajetski and her friend discussing the fall of Rome, drawing parallels to how modern entertainment may distract us from the emergence of new power structures driven by relentless data collection. Mirrors are used to symbolize constant surveillance. According to Foucault, they compel self-observation and self-correction, as if one is always being watched. They are among the earliest tools humans have used to surveil themselves. As the visitor leaves the installation, they become aware of an AI program that has been scanning their every expression and has made a very intimate profile of them. What the AI does: The AI program is watching over you while you are watching the video instide the mirror room. The program tries to determine what emotions you feel and if you stay for over 5minutes it makes a profile of you. The profiles scroll by the exit door for 15minutes and after that the program automatically deletes all data of you. All data is restored on a local hard drive Technical specifications: The emotion recognition program is using MediaPipe files and is based on a code by Rattasart Sakunraats, that in itself is based on Kazuhito Takahashis gesture recognition program with MLP. Images by: Myymälä2 team The project is built upon interviews with three healthcare professionals, each reflecting on the “armors” they rely on to shield themselves from the emotional demands of their work. During the conversations, every participant paints their own symbolic mask, armor, or cape onto a mirror—visualizing the invisible protections they feel compelled to wear. Drawing from her own experience, Kajetski suggests that healthcare workers are metaphorically compelled to wear masks, armor, or capes—necessary shields against the constant strain of their demanding roles. "It was impossible to be yourself completely, and you constantly felt the need to toughen up," she reflects in her video for the exhibition, where she, too, was interviewed with the same questions as the three healthcare workers she interviewed. A second central element of the exhibition is a large mirror wall.
